Fanning is a way of firing a single-action revolver by slapping the hammer back repeatedly with the other palm.
It became known with gunfighter stories of the 19th-century American West.
It is fast but inaccurate, so it belonged more to showmanship and film than to real use.
Today it survives as a technique in some shooting sports.
